The part nobody warns you about

You didn't notice it in the mirror. You noticed it in a photo.

Overhead light, somebody else's camera, and suddenly there's more scalp than you remember. You go back through old pictures to check. You start choosing where to stand.

Then you look into what to do about it, and every option asks for something you don't want to give. Pills with side effects you have to read twice. A foam that has to be reapplied twice a day, forever, and makes your hair feel like straw. A clinic that wants four figures and a standing appointment. A helmet that means sitting motionless in your bedroom for half an hour.

Almost nobody sticks with any of it. Not because the science is bad — because the routine is unlivable. The single biggest predictor of whether a scalp treatment does anything is whether you're still doing it in month four.

So we built the version you'd actually keep doing.

The whole routine

Three steps. You'll have it down by day two.

There is no app to configure, no gel to apply, and nothing to charge overnight.

STEP 01

Plug it in

One USB-A cable into anything — laptop, wall brick, the power bank in your bag. The array lights in about a second. Nothing to pair, nothing to charge.

STEP 02

Put it on dry hair

Snug, brim forward, so the LED panel sits flat against your scalp. Dry hair lets more light through than wet. Skip heavy pomade before a session.

STEP 03

Go do something else

Six to twenty minutes. Answer email, cook eggs, walk the dog on a power bank. The only rule that actually matters is that you do it again tomorrow.

The inside of the Lumora cap held open, showing more than 200 red LEDs in a dense array

Under the brim

The part you never see is the part you're paying for.

Outside: matte black brushed twill, an adjustable strap, nothing that says medical device. Inside: a dense diffuse array of more than 200 diodes, tuned to a single wavelength and spaced to cover hairline to crown evenly — not a bright center with dim edges.

An honest timeline

What the first sixteen weeks actually look like.

Hair grows on a biological clock you can't rush. We'd rather tell you that now than have you give up in week three thinking it failed.

Weeks 1–3

Nothing visible

And that's expected. The only job in this window is building the habit — attach the session to something you already do every single morning.

Weeks 4–8

Less in the drain

The first thing most people notice isn't new growth — it's less shedding on the pillow and in the shower. Take a fixed-lighting photo now so you have a real baseline.

Weeks 8–16

Texture, then density

If it's working for you, this is the window where people report finer hairs filling in and the part looking less stark. Compare photos, not memories.

Beyond

It's maintenance

Light therapy isn't a course you finish. Stop, and you drift back toward your baseline. Six minutes stays six minutes.

Why 650 nanometres

Most light bounces off your head. This wavelength doesn't.

Skin is not equally transparent to all light. Blue and green scatter almost immediately; infrared passes through but dumps a lot of its energy as heat. Between roughly 630 and 670 nm there's a narrow band researchers call the optical window — deep red light that gets several millimetres in without cooking anything.

That depth matters, because a hair follicle isn't on your scalp. It's under it, about three to five millimetres down. Light that stops at the surface never reaches the thing you're trying to reach.

This is the mechanism behind low-level light therapy, or LLLT, a category dermatology has been studying for decades. The Lumora Cap is built to sit squarely in that band and hold a consistent dose across the whole scalp — which, in practice, is the part cheap devices get wrong.

The optical window

400 nm550 nm700 nm850 nm

The marker sits at 650 nm — deep enough to reach follicle depth, short enough to avoid the heat you get further into infrared. Every diode in the cap is tuned here.

Before you ask

The questions we actually get.

Does red light therapy actually regrow hair?

Low-level light therapy has been studied for years in dermatology, with mixed but genuinely promising results for pattern thinning — and it's a well-tolerated approach with very few reported side effects. That said: the Lumora Cap is a general-wellness device, not a medical one. It is not FDA-cleared, we make no medical claims, and some people will see no change at all. If your hair loss is sudden, patchy, or accompanied by other symptoms, see a dermatologist first — that's a different problem than this addresses.

How long until I see something?

Plan on twelve to sixteen weeks before judging it, and take a photo in fixed lighting on day one so you're comparing evidence instead of memory. People often report reduced shedding earlier than that — around week four to eight — but that's easier to feel than to photograph. Anyone promising visible regrowth in thirty days is selling you something.

How long does delivery take?

Shipping is free on every order and you'll get tracking by email once your parcel is moving. We don't publish a delivery estimate, because we'd rather give you a real number than a flattering one — orders are fulfilled by our production partner and transit times vary. If you need a date before you commit, email us and we'll tell you what we're actually seeing on recent orders.

Six minutes is short. Is longer better?

Not necessarily. Light therapy has a dose-response curve that flattens out — past a point, more exposure stops adding benefit. Twenty minutes is a comfortable ceiling. Six minutes done every day beats thirty minutes done twice a week, which is the whole reason we designed it around a wearable rather than a chair.

Will it fit my head?

One size, with an adjustable rear strap that covers the usual range of adult head sizes. It should feel like a normal cap worn snug — firm enough that the LED panel stays flat on your scalp, not tight enough to leave a mark.

Does it work on long hair, or do I need to be shaved?

It works on hair of any length, but light reaches your scalp better through dry, loose, product-free hair. If you have thick or long hair, part it a few ways before putting the cap on. Skip heavy pomades, waxes, and oils right before a session — they sit between the light and where it needs to go.

Is it cordless?

No, and that's deliberate. It runs off a USB-A cable rather than an internal battery, which keeps the cap light, keeps output consistent from the first minute to the last, and removes the most common failure point in cheap devices. A pocket power bank makes it fully portable if you want to walk around.

Is it safe? Does it get hot?

Deep red LEDs at this output produce very little heat — it should feel warm at most, never uncomfortable. Don't stare directly into the array. Check with a doctor first if you're pregnant, have a photosensitivity condition, take photosensitizing medication such as certain antibiotics, retinoids or diuretics, have an active scalp condition or open wound, or have a history of skin cancer.

Can I use it alongside minoxidil or finasteride?

People commonly do, and light therapy works by a different mechanism than either. We're not in a position to give you medical advice, though — run any combination past the doctor who prescribed or recommended your treatment.

What if it isn't for me?

Email us within 30 days of delivery and we'll walk you through the return. We refund the purchase price once the cap is back with us in resellable condition; return postage is on you unless the item arrived damaged or faulty, in which case we cover everything. Worth being straight about the maths: 30 days won't tell you whether it changed your hair — the timeline above is months, not weeks. It will tell you whether the device works properly, fits you, and fits your morning, which is what most returns are really about. The full policy is here.

The best time was five years ago. The second best is tomorrow morning.

One cap, one cable, six minutes. Thirty days to decide whether it earns its place on your nightstand.

Important: The Lumora Cap is a general-wellness consumer product. It is not a medical device, it is not FDA-cleared, and these statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or condition, including any form of hair loss.

Individual results vary and some users will experience no change. Hair loss has many causes — genetic, hormonal, nutritional, autoimmune, and medication-related among them — and light therapy does not address most of them. Timelines described on this page reflect commonly reported experiences with low-level light therapy generally, not a guarantee of outcome. Consult a physician or dermatologist before use, particularly if you are pregnant, photosensitive, taking photosensitizing medication, or have any scalp or skin condition.
